Professor Dr. Md. Jonaid Shafiq
Professor Dr. Md. Jonaid Shafiq is nationally and internationally recognized as a pioneer in Pain Medicine and advanced pain management in Bangladesh.
A visionary in his field, he served as the Founder and Head of the Pain Medicine Unit at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU)—formerly known as IPGMR or PG Hospital— until 2009.
He has also served with distinction as Professor and Head of the Department of Pain Medicine at Uttara Adhunik Medical College.

Academic Excellence and International Specialization
Demonstrating academic excellence early in life, Dr. Shafiq secured the prestigious 16th position in the merit list of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination.
He went on to earn his MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1985. In 1989, he moved to Japan to join Kyushu University as a Research Fellow, subsequently obtaining his PhD in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine from the same institution.
A Landmark Milestone in Bangladeshi Healthcare
Upon returning to Bangladesh in 1993, Dr. Shafiq became a foundational figure at both the PG Hospital, now BSMMU, and the Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital (JBFH).
He made medical history by establishing the country's first dedicated Pain Clinic, marking a transformative milestone in the evolution of Bangladeshi healthcare.
Under his guidance, Pain Clinics across Bangladesh have evolved from basic units into highly specialized Pain Medicine facilities. They now provide modern, comprehensive, and multimodal treatments for patients suffering from acute and chronic debilitating pain.
Through continuous professional training programs and rigorous academic initiatives, Dr. Shafiq has been instrumental in embedding modern concepts and interventional pain management practices across the national medical landscape.
Clinical Expertise and Humanitarian Impact
Dr. Shafiq possesses exceptionally deep clinical experience, having successfully performed more than 50,000 interventional pain procedures.
His expertise has made him a sought-after global speaker, leading him to deliver lectures as an invited guest at numerous international conferences and academic events.
Beyond his clinical and academic duties, Dr. Shafiq is deeply committed to social responsibility and humanitarianism.
He regularly spearheads initiatives providing free healthcare services to farmers and marginalized populations living in remote, underserved regions, vastly improving medical access for disadvantaged communities.

- Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA): Life Member.
- Bangladesh Society of Anaesthesiologists: Life Member.
- International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP): Active Member.
As a leading academic voice, he serves as the Executive Editor of the Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science and is a member of the Editorial Panel for the Pain Journal.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has authored and contributed to more than 40 scientific publications in peer-reviewed national and international medical journals.

Driven by his expansive clinical experience, Dr. Shafiq has dedicated himself to making advanced pain management concepts accessible and easily understandable to the general public.
To bridge this gap, he actively writes books, articles, and educational materials focused on public health awareness and self-management of pain.
At present, Dr. Jonaid Shafiq continues to provide specialized patient care at the Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.
As the chief architect of Pain Clinics in Bangladesh, he remains dedicated to advancing the frontier of Pain Medicine and mentoring the next generation of skilled physicians.
